Saint Rita was born at Roccaporena, Italy, in 1381. At an early age, Rita knew she wanted to devote her life to God and become a nun. Her elderly parents felt different and, at age 12, arranged for her to marry a man who later proved to be neglectful, abusive and unfaithful. After 18 unhappy years of marriage, Saint Rita's husband was killed in a street fight.
Now alone, Rita gave herself to works of charity and to a more intense life of prayer. One day as she knelt in prayer, her forehead was pierced by a violent wound, a thorn from the crown that covered Jesus' own head. She bore this wound for 15 years until the day of her death.
She died on May 22, 1457 at Cascia and was canonized in 1900.
Saint Rita is recognized today as the patroness of those who suffer from physical abuse. Her feast day is May 22nd.
